Active Travel

EPIKS work promoting active travel is in the front line of local and national efforts to tackle climate change. Transport contributes 30% of all UK carbon emissions so this is an area where our personal choices really can make a difference. So what’s active travel? Active travel refers to journeys made by walking, wheeling (using a wheelchair or mobility aid), or cycling, promoting physical activity and offering a sustainable alternative to motorized transport.
Our new Walk Wheel Ride Active Travel Hubs in Huddersfield, Holme Valley and Batley and the Spen Valley will help local people find different ways to travel and reduce their carbon footprints by enabling them to make lower carbon travel choices more of the time.
Check out our online Walk Wheel Ride Active Travel Hub where you can find lots of information about local walking groups, cycling groups, cycle training, accessibility guides, routes to explore, news and events, information about bike shops and instructors and much more!
E-bikes
We offer e-Bike trials across Kirklees to people who want to try before they buy or to people who may not have considered cycling as an option. You can read about our work taking e-bikes out and about in 2024, and the new possibilities that opened up for some of those who tried an e-bike here.
And if you’re thinking of getting an e-bike, check out our handy online guide “How to get the right e-bike”
EPIKS doesn’t sell e-bikes and we don’t have any affiliate links with any e-bike manufacturers so you can be sure when you talk to us you’ll be getting independent, impartial advice.
We advertise details of our e-bike activities on our Eventbrite page and on our Walk Wheel Ride social media channels.

Guided walks/ wheels
As well as all the great information on walking and wheeling you can find on our Walk Wheel Ride website, we deliver accessible guided walks/wheels to show people how easy it can be to commute short distances on foot or by bike or wheelchair, ensuring that our activities are as inclusive as possible.
Some of our walks explore routes to work or college, others explore areas of local heritage or natural beauty you may not be aware of. Have you ever been to Snow Island, for example? Have a look at our walks page to see what we get up to.
Commonplace – Listening to you, helping you shape the future
We’ve set up a community consultation on Commonplace. This is an area where you can tell us about the changes which would make the biggest difference to your journeys by adding your ideas to our interactive map or taking part in our short surveys. Your feedback will help shape initiatives that make active travel easier, more enjoyable, and a real alternative for more people in Huddersfield.
Green Routes Kirklees
So, you know we love our e-bikes, you know we run walks and provide walking and wheeling resources, but what about looking after the places people walk, wheel and ride? We do that as well! For many years EPIKS trusty band of volunteers have been out and about on a weekly basis opening up pathways along rivers, through woodlands and across meadows. You may have seen them picking up litter, cleaning up graffiti , managing overgrown vegetation and installing waymarkers and information boards so people know where to go and what to look out for.
In 2024, with the support of Kirklees Council’s Growing Great Places team we launched a successful crowdfunder to kickstart Green Routes Kirklees so we could take this work up a level and start running more regular volunteer work parties in more areas of Kirklees, initially focussing on the traffic free paths that follow the River Colne around Huddersfield.
We’re aiming to continue and extend this work with a mix of grant funding, support from local businesses (hello local businesses!) and donations through our fundraising link.
If you’d like to join our volunteers out and about helping to keep our green routes beautiful, send an email to and check out our volunteering page. If your business or employer would like to know more about how they can get involved visit our environmental stewardship page.
