Aldi support EPIKS to give people access to the River Colne and woodland paths in Milnsbridge. Breathing spaces like the Riverside Walk are invaluable for people and wildlife alike. Back in 2000, a kilometre-long walking route with benches, heritage features and river viewing points was created by local community groups thanks to Lottery funding. As with any park, path or greenspace, the route needs maintenance and this is where regular funding and practical help from Aldi has been invaluable to keep the area free from litter and overgrown vegetation.
EPIKS works with volunteers, community groups, paid staff and landowners to create a long-term, low-cost solution to keeping wild areas accessible for people. Being able to take time out, experience nature and get exercise is becoming more important as people see the benefits to wellbeing and alternative ways to travel in traffic-free places. Sponsorship of regular volunteer work parties and riverside visits from Aldi Staff help to keep the area clear and inviting for the community.
Jeff Keenlyside, volunteer director at EPIKS said, ‘Many businesses back onto rivers in our area and sometimes these can accumulate litter, attract anti-social behaviour and end up looking neglected. What the people of Milnsbridge realised years ago that the River Colne is really an asset to the area and being able to walk or sit there and watch a heron or kingfisher is good for everybody’s health and the image of the town. Thanks to commitment from Aldi, Milnsbridge Action Group and their insights into the benefits of a semi-wild accessible place like this, we will be able to keep a valuable wildlife and heritage route open for all to enjoy.’
EPIKS are keen to hear from businesses like Aldi who would like to support their style of integrated working with partners and the voluntary sector to improve local rivers and greenspaces in the area. For further info on corporate sponsorship, contact Jeff Keenlyside
