On Saturday April 26th we launched our new Batley and Spen Community Active Travel Hub. And we’re thrilled to say our launch event was a fantastic success!

A huge thank you to everyone who came down to Market Place in Batley to show their support, take part in activities, and help us kick things off with energy and enthusiasm. It was inspiring to see so many residents engaging with the project — from trying out e-bikes, getting bikes checked, registered, and gathering advice about walking, wheeling, and cycling more in everyday life.

EPIKS Active Travel Engagement Officer Iain Solanki-Willats said, “It’s fantastic to get started with our new work in North Kirklees . We know that active travel brings many benefits to the body, the mind, the pocket and environment. We’re looking forward to helping people with the skills, confidence and information they need to choose active travel more often for their everyday journeys.”

Special thanks to our “Dr Bike” team from Oakwell Cycles, the Neighbourhood Policing Team, Kirklees Council and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority for their invaluable support on the day and throughout the project.

What’s Next?

Our third Community Active Travel Hub will now be popping up all over North Kirklees— bringing active travel services right to your doorstep.

Here’s what you can expect over the coming months:

  • Dr Bike sessions – free bike checks and simple repairs
  • E-bike test rides – find out if an electric bike is right for you
  • Guided rides – gain confidence cycling on local routes
  • Guided walks and accessible route support – discover great ways to get around on foot or wheels

At every event, our friendly team will be available with resources, advice, and encouragement to help you walk, wheel, or ride more often in your day-to-day life.
