Green Routes

Walk Wheel Ride
In 2023 we launched Walk Wheel Ride, our active travel program to give people advice and inspiration to travel on foot, by bike, scooter, wheelchair or buggy in Kirklees. Starting with the online hub in 2023, we extended this work to include Walk Wheel Ride Active Travel Hubs in Huddersfield, Holme Valley and Batley and the Spen Valley thanks to support from West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Network Rail.
Our Active Travel team run lots of fabulous walking, wheeling and cycling activities- you can read more about them on our Active Travel page. Lots of great work to encourage active travel, but where is all this active travelling going to happen and who is going to look after the routes? That’s why we launched Green Routes…
Green Routes Kirklees crowdfunder
In 2024 with the support of Kirklees Council’s Growing Great Places team we launched a successful crowdfunder on the community fundraising site Spacehive to kickstart Green Routes Kirklees so we could take our work on green routes up a level and start running more regular volunteer work parties in more areas of Kirklees, initially focussing on the traffic free paths that follow the River Colne around Huddersfield.
This is just the start for Green Routes Kirklees- with a mix of grant funding, support from local businesses and donations through our fundraising link we’re aiming to continue and extend this work for many years to come.
If you’d like to join our volunteers out and about helping to keep our green routes beautiful, send an email to and check out our volunteering page. If your business or employer would like to know more about how they can get involved visit our environmental stewardship page.
